Exhibition Overview
This exhibition celebrates the rich tradition and legacy of quilting, showcasing the deep dedication of various quilting communities. Among them is the Friendship Quilting Ministry from Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, which emphasizes the warmth and functionality of quilts to provide support to those in need. With over eighty members, this Ministry has created hundreds of quilts for diverse causes, including hurricane relief and gifts for notable figures. The exhibition also highlights the evolution of quilting as an art form, allowing viewers to appreciate its historical significance and the personal narratives crafted by modern quilters.
In addition to the Friendship Quilting Ministry, the exhibit features quilts by artists Irma Jackson, Mickey Studerant, and Kimaley Johnson, enriching the narrative of quilting across generations. Quilting serves as a powerful medium that unites people, fostering connections and community through shared creativity and storytelling. It transcends cultural boundaries, allowing individuals to express their experiences and emotions through fabric and thread. These exhibitions not only preserve the artistry of quilting but also invite new generations to engage with this time-honored craft, strengthening the bonds within our communities.
A Commitment to Arts for everyone
Accessibility at "Friendship's Colors of Life"
The "Friendship's Colors of Life" exhibition highlights our ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. We strive to make art welcoming for everyone, and this show includes several features designed with accessibility in mind.
A key highlight is the tactile wooden panel, laser-cut to model one of the quilts, allowing visitors with low or no vision to feel the quilt's intricate details, much like Braille. Special thanks to Savannah Shanley and Mixxer Community Makers Space for their collaboration on this project. Savannah also created a hand-sewn quilt left open for guests to touch and explore its different layers, giving visitors a tactile understanding of quilt-making. The Quilting Ministry contributed small hand quilts for visitors to handle, which were displayed on podiums throughout the gallery for easy access.
We also had the pleasure of hosting Springwell Network, a non-profit serving adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities. During their visit, we provided a tour and hosted an interactive treasure hunt, where they explored the gallery and identified details in the artwork. Their visit was a reminder of the importance of making art accessible and enjoyable for all, and we’re proud to continue fostering such connections in the community.
These efforts are part of our broader goal to ensure that everyone feels welcome at the gallery, and that art is an experience that can be enjoyed by all.
A Celebration of Woman hood
Cheryl Lindsays 2024 Queens Holiday Gathering
The 2024 Queens Holiday Gathering was an unforgettable evening filled with love, laughter, and celebration. Nearly one hundred Queens gathered at the Delta Fine Arts Center for a night of connection, games, and heartfelt recognition of each other's accomplishments. The room buzzed with energy as attendees played Connection Bingo and Jeopardy, enjoyed prizes, and formed new bonds.
The event celebrated the remarkable achievements of the Queens in attendance—many had received promotions, earned certifications, expanded businesses, or marked personal milestones such as retirement or being cancer survivors. The host reminded everyone: "YOU MATTER. I SEE YOU, and we thank YOU for your impact and shining your light."
The night was further uplifted by an inspiring word from the Honorable Denise Hartsfield, who encouraged the Queens to recognize their purpose and support one another. The event’s success was also due to the hard work of the Queen Ambassadors and the excellent service provided by the Delta Fine Arts Center staff.
As the evening concluded, Cheryl expressed deep gratitude for the love, spirit, and generosity of everyone who attended, leaving the Queens feeling empowered and inspired to continue shining in their own lives.
