Haitian Art is Focus of New Delta Exhibit

Journal Now Best Bets: Haitian Art is Focus of New Delta Exhibit

Winston-Salem Delta Fine Arts will present, “Selebrasyon! An Exhibition of Haitian Art from Local Collections” Tuesday-Aug. 27 at the Delta Arts Center, 2711 New Walkertown Road.

An opening reception will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Simona Atkins Allen Gallery with Jean-Claude Legagnuer, a world-renowned artist. There will be a live performance of Haitian rhythms and dance.

Delta Arts Center will also hold a community conversation, “Haiti Today — Art, Politics & Recovery,” at 4 p.m. Friday.

The exhibition features two- and three-dimensional works from Delta Fine Arts’ permanent collection alongside paintings by Legagneur and works of other Haitian artists from private collections across Forsyth County.

Inspiration for the exhibit came from paintings given to Delta Fine Arts by John and Vivian Hewitt in 1989, and the request by Vivian Hewitt in 2010 that the importance of the Haitian pieces not be lost in light of the earthquake that destroyed so many of Haiti’s cultural icons.

Admission to all events is free. Select works by Legagneur will be for sale. For information, visit www.DeltaArtsCenter.org or call (336) 722-2625.
